🥝If you've spent any time in New Zealand, chances are someone has told you to go to Raglan. And if you've been, chances are you're already planning your return.
Raglan is a small harbour town on the west coast of the Waikato, about 45 minutes from Hamilton. On paper it's unremarkable — population under 3,000, one main street, no shopping mall. But Raglan has something that's impossible to manufacture: an atmosphere. A vibe. A way of life that makes you want to slow down, breathe deeply and stay a little longer.
It's the kind of place that inspires things. Like, for example, one of our favourite Sweet As Tees designs.
🥝Raglan's reputation rests on its waves. Manu Bay and Whale Bay are two of the most consistent left-hand point breaks in the Southern Hemisphere — long, clean, perfectly shaped waves that have been drawing surfers from around the world for decades.
The 1966 film The Endless Summer put Raglan on the global surfing map when filmmakers stumbled upon its waves during their worldwide search for perfect surf. Sixty years later the waves are just as good and the surfers keep coming.
But Raglan isn't just for experienced surfers. The town has excellent surf schools, gentle beginner breaks and a welcoming culture that makes newcomers feel part of the community from day one.
🥝Walk down Bow Street — Raglan's main drag — and you immediately feel the vibe. Surf shops sit next to art galleries. Cafes serve excellent flat whites alongside acai bowls. Street art decorates walls. Musicians play outside on warm afternoons.
It's a creative community that's attracted artists, musicians, writers and free spirits alongside the surfers. The result is a town with genuine character — not manufactured cool, but the real thing.
🥝Obviously. Whether you're a seasoned surfer or a complete beginner, getting in the water at Raglan is the essential experience. Book a lesson with one of the local surf schools if you're new to it — the instructors are brilliant and the beginner waves are genuinely fun.
The Raglan Blowhole walk is a short and spectacular coastal hike that takes you along dramatic black sand cliffs to a natural blowhole. On a big swell day it's genuinely impressive — a reminder of the raw power of the Tasman Sea.
Raglan's food scene punches well above its weight. The Shack is a local institution for breakfast. Raglan Roast does excellent coffee. For something more substantial, the fish and chips eaten on the harbour wall with salt air in your face is as good as it gets.
A short drive from Raglan, Bridal Veil Falls drops 55 metres into a bush-fringed pool. It's one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Waikato and an easy 20-minute return walk from the carpark.
West-facing Raglan gets spectacular sunsets. Find a spot on the harbour wall or walk up to the lookout above town and watch the sky turn orange and pink over the Tasman. It's free, it's breathtaking and it's uniquely Raglan.
Raglan has a thriving arts community with several galleries showcasing local work. The town has inspired generations of New Zealand artists — the light, the landscape and the laid-back lifestyle create perfect conditions for creativity.
🥝Raglan is about 45 minutes west of Hamilton and approximately 2.5 hours from Auckland. The drive takes you through rolling Waikato farmland before the road descends dramatically to the harbour. There's no public transport directly to Raglan so you'll need a car — but the drive is part of the experience.
🥝Raglan has options for every budget — from the famous Raglan Backpackers (one of the best hostels in New Zealand) to holiday homes and boutique accommodation. Book ahead in summer, particularly over the Christmas and January holiday period when the whole of New Zealand seems to descend on the town.
